About Need to Share News

The story behind the stories.

Need to Share News is an independent news organization focused on national security and FOIA reporting, public records, accountability, politics, and overlooked details hiding in plain sight.

01

The name

“Need to know” became “need to share.”

Before 9/11, intelligence was too often protected inside organizational stovepipes under a strict “need to know” culture. The 9/11 Commission called for a better balance and a “need-to-share” culture of integration. That change is the publication’s name, logo, and operating idea: protect what must remain protected, but move useful information to the people who can act on it. Read the Commission recommendation ↗

02

The publication

Independent, source-linked, and accountable.

The original site published from 2014 through 2020, often using declassified records, official reports, public datasets, and close readings of news coverage to surface details worth a second look.

03

The archive

Earlier reporting, preserved and readable.

The archive keeps earlier Need to Share News reporting available with original publication dates and links to surviving source records whenever possible.

04

The standard

Transparent about evidence and corrections.

Recovered pages link to the original page and the archived capture used in reconstruction. New reporting identifies sources, distinguishes established facts from analysis, records material updates, and corrects errors transparently.
